El Toro Records has produced a brand new Collectors Choice series, which has two volumes by now and include rare 1950’s recorded material, which you can find only on 45’s, 75’s and acetates. Sure it is not the same as vinyl, but, you should agree, sometimes cds are just more convenient. The first volume is called “Texas Fever” and has 20 tracks of brilliant rockin’ hillbilly sound, the choice is specific and great. So here are some performers I would like to mention: Ken Marvin - Nashville's Grand Ole Opry Star (the Winston County Pea Picker, who played music in 47 states. Some people also know him as Lloyd George or maybe Lonzo from comedy team “Lonzo and Oscar”). Fred Crawford - steady little piano/guitar jiver, who made a big hit "Rock Candy Rock” on Starday label in 1956. Jack Cardwell, who became popular already with his first release on the King label, which was a tribute to Hank Williams and reportedly sold over a half a million records. The Jacoby Brothers – Gene and Boy, who have been performing all around San Antonio and across Texas, appearing also on numerous radio and TV shows. Al Urban – whose music still has been played strong on radio stations across the globe; maybe you know also that recently he was given the 2008 "Heart of Texas" award. And so on, and so on. All of them are so different, but has the same thing – all of them, in one way or the other, have connection to Texas… and, sure, hillbilly music. Probably some rock’n’rollers will find it boring after some songs, but I loved it! So much fun to listen to! Every composition has its feature… oh, modern bands have so much to learn! Not in copying the music, but to make it sound natural and different from others. And most of those hillbilly compositons are more rockin’ than some rock’n’roll songs nowadays. Get a copy for yourself (especially if you like hillbilly music) and you won’t regret it.
